Information
The 2005-06 Handbook is in the mail
Fall String Camp has an early deadline this year, Sept. 16. Lynn Bulger needs
college students to serve as counselors.
Fall Clinic and Luncheon ˆ Susan Scott and Stella Anderson are co-coordinators.
Speakers are Nancy Lokken and Kirk Moss
Solo Competition ˆ Liz Ericksen is the coordinator
Honors Orchestra ˆ Jen Arco and Kevin Martin are co-coordinators
Middle Level Orchestra Festival ˆ Cassandra Herrold is coordinator
There are forms for Talent Search and Nominations for Awards
Initiatives
Student members will be admitted free to teacher training sessions and workshops
Kirk Moss is compiling a data base of Minnesota students in music ed -- identifying
students is the hard part ˆ He is trying to target university teachers
who have students in music ed.
Connie Aiken made a motion to offer student membership for 1/2 price. MNSOTA
would pay 1/2 of the student ASTA price. Stacy Aldrich seconded the motion.
It was amended to offer this to the first 100 students to apply. This passed
unanimously.
Preparation for Advocacy Emergencies
Diane Wright will write up what was done in Marshall to save the music program
Quick communication is important
See potential cuts and problems before the school board vote ˆ If you sense
problems, get on them immediately
Superintendents talk to each other ˆ Lesson programs are being cut ˆ
These are jewels for the communities that have them, but they are hard to keep
The ASOL ˆ American Symphony Orchestra League has a section on their web-site
which gives a number of advocacy statistics
New Programs in Minnesota
Grant Wilcox talked about bringing ensembles into communities to help get new
programs started
David Kazamcheck at Northwestern College is interested in bringing his ensemble
Brian Cole has written an article about this for the national American String
Teacher
Faith Farr and Grant Wilcox are putting together a survey about string programs
to put in the journal
Grant would like to talk to superintendents about what makes music programs
valuable
A list of every string program in the state is needed ˆ MMEA may have such
a list
The Minnesota State High School League Web Site has lists of teachers in each
high school and what they teach

The MNSOTA Handbook and Journal were given the ASTA best handbook award

If you have ideas for next year’s workshop talk to Lorie Hippen
The National convention next year is in Kansas City, Mar 8-11 ˆ Grant Wilcox’s
HS group from Brainerd will be performing. The following 3 years the conventions
are in Detroit, Albuquerque, and Washington, DC
TISQ concert and classes was funded in part by Education Minnesota
Deb Sittko likes to have a pool of names of conductors for All-State
Door Prize
